Abstract:Reaction of β-chloroethanol with sodium azide gives β-azidoethanol which in turn reacts with phosphorus oxychloride (triethylamine as an acid-trapping agent) to form a novel compound—tri(β-azidoethyl) phosphate (TAEP). The structure of TAEP has been identified by IR,1HNMR,MS and elemental analysis. TAEP is a colorless liquid with theoritical nitrogen content 41.3%,density (25 ℃) 1.337 g·cm-3,n25D 1.484 0. The onset and peak temperature of TAEP decomposition measured by DSC (heating rate 10 K·min-1,nitrogen atmosphere) are 199 ℃ and 248 ℃ respectively. Impact sensitivity of TAEP is 20% (hammer 10 kg,height 25 cm,sample mass (50±1) mg,25 tests).

Abstract:On the basis of contact angle experiments, surface energies of TATB,HMX and four fluor-polymers were calculated by geometric equation, harmonic equation and Young-Good-Girifalco-Fowkes (YGGF) equation respectively. The values of surface energies obtained by YGGF equation are more credible than those obtained by the others. The calculated interfacial energies between TATB and fluor-polymers show that the latent Van der waal′s interaction between F2314 and TATB is the most powerful.

Abstract:Effect of different solvents on thermal decomposition of RDX was studied by using special Bourdon manometer. Solvents can accelerate, inhibit or do not affect decomposition of RDX: (1) inert solvents, such as benzene, naphthalene, isooctane, do not affect decomposition rate of RDX; decomposition rate in these solvents is the same as that in melt state; (2) solvents, like aliphatic-aromatic compounds, alcohols, ketones, ethers and esters, increase decomposition rate of RDX; (3) solvents with large viscosity inhibit thermal decomposition of RDX.

Abstract:The thermal properties of polymer bonded HMX/TATB are studied by using DSC and critical temperature determination, and the influence of additives on HMX′s thermal-sensitivity,such as TATB,binder,Al powder and wax is discussed as well. The results indicate that TATB alone gives only one exothermic peak whereas TATB containing 5% binder two exothermic peak. When HMX content is over 40%,the DSC exothermic peak temperature of polymer bonded HMX/TATB approaches to that of HMX. The content of TATB in formulation obviously affects the critical temperature (Tcr) of thermal explosion in 1 000 s. When TATB content is about 80%,Tcr increases greatly.

Abstract:A study of aluminum droplet ignition and combustion through an advanced experimental technique in normal and low-gravity environment is presented. It was found that the gravity level greatly influences dynamics of aluminum droplet combustion and morphology of combustion products. In addition, the content and pressure of oxidizing environment also influence sizes,size-distribution,shape of combustion products.

Abstract:By the kinetic analysis of thermal decomposition reaction under adiabatic and nearly adiabatic conditions,it is proved that the reaction is related only to the properties of materials and is not influenced by external factors. Since the characteristic of thermal decomposition can be used to evaluate the thermal safety of energetic materials,a new equation is deduced to calculate the initial temperature of thermal decomposition based on the properties of materials.
Abstract:This paper is a historical review of propellant types and of processing methods that have been used in the USA in last 50 years. Both castable and extrudable propellants are discussed. A wide range of oxidizers are discussed from the use of potassium perchlorate in very early solid propellants to the more recent use of nitramines. The wide range of propellant binders that has been used over the decades are discussed, and merits of the systems described. Discussion of cure systems, and even bonding agents, are included when appropriate.
